While most people think the number one Waze alternative is Google Maps, few apps offer a crowdsourcing incident reporting experience.
Truth be told, this particular feature has also caught the attention of other companies, including Apple, but Waze continues to dominate the market on this front.

Flitsmeister is one of the best Waze alternatives, using a similar approach and offering features that you won't find elsewhere, including service vehicle alerts (now also coming to Waze) and traffic light status.

Starting this week, Android Auto and CarPlay support is locked behind a paywall in Flitsmeister.

The parent company shipped a new update that enables three plans called Flitsmeister Start, Pro, and Pro Plus. Android Auto and CarPlay support was previously available free of charge, allowing users to connect their smartphones to the vehicle and project the app's interface to the larger screen on the dashboard.

Beginning with version 12.0, this feature is only available as part of the Pro plan, which costs 3 Euros per month in Europe (approximately $3.20). The company has also increased the price of the Pro plan from 2 Euros to 3 Euros, promising to focus more on the app, hardware, and the development of new features.

With Android Auto and CarPlay support locked behind the paywall, it'll be interesting to see if Flitsmeister users will stick with the app or switch to Waze. Running the app on the larger screen in the car is a key feature, especially because Flitsmeister is primarily aimed at drivers, so the change impacts a significant share of the user base.

Meanwhile, Waze remains available free of charge and continues to command a market share larger than any other app. Rough estimates indicate that Waze has 140 million monthly users, while the latest statistics shared by Flitsmeister in May 2020 pointed to 1.7 million users.

Waze offers everything at no cost. It's owned by Google and continues to operate independently from Google Maps, despite a growing number of people claiming that merging the two apps would make more sense in the long term from a navigation app perspective. However, Google still has no intention to integrate Waze in Google Maps.

Waze is also getting more big updates, including new functionality like warnings about emergency vehicles stopped on the road. The feature is powered by a partnership between Waze and local authorities, so it's only available in limited countries, with the company promising to expand it to more regions.

Waze has recently been updated with warnings for speed bumps and sharp curves while also getting improved roundabout navigation and notifications for speed limit changes. All features are available on iPhone and Android and will eventually make their way to Android Auto and CarPlay.
