How do you reconcile durability and strength with the desire to create the most zen-like space inside a home? You build something like The Kaizen Home, that's how.
The Kaizen Home is one of the newest developments in Malibu, California. It doesn't stand out for size or the biggest price tag in the Golden State, which we know can be a market where real estate sells for more money than you can count in one extended sitting. But it is a standout nonetheless, for a variety of reasons.
Completed in 2022, the mansion is the brainchild of developer Kris Halliday of MKH Developments, who handled every aspect of the build, starting with the design. The idea for the project was to make it "exude biophilic chic," a mansion that would be like a fortress that could withstand anything Mother Nature might throw at it but disguised like a five-plus-star resort. A mansion that would still be here in a few hundred years.
In the process, Halliday also created a haven for a passionate car collector because the home features two large garages that could easily accommodate as many as ten vehicles, an oversize driveway, and a couple of terraces that come in handy when guests come over. Both garages have electric charging because this mansion is also all about sustainability, too. Surprising, we know.
In fact, L.A.-based premium estate agency Aaron Kirman tells Michael Blakey in a recent interview (see the second video below) the mansion can boast of having the largest solar array in California – and probably even the world. The entire roof is lined with solar panels, which helps with running the home sustainably and with minimal reliance on the grid.
Considering the mansion is a smart home, every bit helps. Everything from the window curtains to the waterfalls on the large stone walls, the large walls of glass, and the temperature of the water in the shower is automated. Toilets are smart, and oversize onyx walls or onyx statement pieces of furniture light up when you approach them.
The Kaizen Home offers 21,500 square feet (1,997 square meters) of living space spread across two floors, and six bedrooms and ten bathrooms. In the middle of the home is a private, very luxurious garden with its own water feature and koi pond. Even in interior spaces, you get floor-to-ceiling living walls. The numerous skylights create the impression that you're outside even when you're indoors, but it's all this lush vegetation that makes the manse "biophilic chic."
Amenities include the generous garages, a gorgeous cinema and two separate (and quite large) screening rooms, formal dining, an entertainment room, a candy room (next to the private theater), a fully-equipped gym with attached spa-like bathroom and laundry room, and an integrated studio apartment for guests or stay-in relatives.
Just to give you an idea of how insanely luxurious this mansion is, the open-plan main kitchen is actually comprised of several kitchens. There's a show kitchen, with appliances hidden behind panels in the hardwood wall, and a secret prep kitchen you might not be able to find if you didn't know where to look. The show kitchen then spills outside to the pool area, where it becomes an outdoor barbecue place and then converts into a bar.
Even the infinity pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean actually integrates several other elements that make it even cooler than it already is. Not only is it Olympic length, but it features a sunken lounge area built around a firepit, a jacuzzi that can easily fit 25 people comfortably, and a separate shallow area where you can work on your tan.
Every bedroom has a private terrace, and the two main suites come with onyx-decked bathrooms and walk-in wardrobes that also get views to the Pacific. Finishes are mostly wood for the floors, walls, and ceilings and hand-carved stone for everything else – mostly onyx and marble.
To say that the Kaizen Home is overwhelming in its styling and understated opulence is not an exaggeration. Blakey is a well-known music producer and, as of a few years ago, a popular YouTuber who leverages his fame to get access to exclusive real estate like this. Even he is at a loss for words at times while touring the place, to the point where the only description he can come up with is "stupid sick."
Jokes aside, this is the kind of development that shows you can have it all in a house: a fortress that could withstand anything from earthquakes to tornadoes (though probably not zombie invasions), sustainability, comfort, zen, and sophistication. Oh, and lest we forget, huge spaces for your growing fleet of dailies and collectibles. If you can afford $49.5 million on a house, you can afford to start working on your dream auto gallery.
