After capturing the hearts of people all over the world, campervanning has become a much-loved symbol of freedom and fun. And this is due to a variety of factors, including the now mainstream work-from-home practice, people's desire to explore new places, as well as financial and environmental considerations.
From van conversions carried out professionally with an abundance of features and amenities to thoughtfully designed DIY projects, there are plenty of campervans one can take inspiration from when deciding to build their own motorhome. And there are many previously inexperienced people who did just that - bought a van, did some research, watched a bunch of YouTube videos, and built their own custom micro-home on wheels to travel the world.

Tory Delury is one of the so-called van-lifers who took on the challenge of building her campervan on a budget. The 26-year-old says she caught the wanderlust bug a few years ago while on a road trip across the country, and she loved the rootless, spontaneous freedom living in a motorhome gave her, so she decided to rebuild a van with the help of YouTube videos.

Her self-converted DIY campervan is a 2015 RAM Promaster she bought in 2019 for $31,000 with just 24,000 miles on the clock. She worked on the conversion on her own and spent an additional $17,700 on the rebuild. Once you take a look at the photos and video below, you will see that this is a simply made, very practical rig, but it's tastefully decorated and reflects Tory's energy and exuberant personality.

The RAM Promaster is all red on the outside and pink on the inside, making it a really girly conversion. The van was bare when she purchased it, so she had a blank canvas to build upon. She outlined a suitable layout for her needs and did all the work herself, from building the floor to placing the skylight above the bed. One thing that sets this build apart is the personalized interior, which Tory says was inspired by singer Taylor Swift and her songs. After going to the Reputation Stadium Tour in 2018, Tory was impressed by the singer's resilience and honesty, which inspired her to start a jacket-painting business that helped fund her van conversion.

Simplicity and practicality are the best words to describe this van conversion, showing how little you need to embark on a nomad lifestyle. Despite the compact size of the van, a few design techniques, like using soft colors and materials and incorporating multi-purpose furniture with hidden-storage compartments, help make the interior feel more spacious.

While the walls and cabinets are almost entirely white, Tory chose to paint the ceiling pink to give it a bit of personality. A series of pink-colored accessories can be found throughout the van, like picture frames, cabinet door knobs, a pink guitar, and even a pink fan. The young woman also used faux flowers to decorate and fill in the tough-to-panel spots in the van.

As you step inside, there is a small kitchen on the left, with a faux marble countertop. She used marble-looking contact paper over the plywood to give it a smooth look - a popular interior design hack. Plenty of storage cabinets hold all the necessities like dishes and water tanks. She also installed a small sink and a box for her makeup and skincare products at the end of the countertop, which she also decorated with flowers to avoid the appearance of clutter. There is no cooking appliance in sight, but she does have a portable cooktop stored in the clothes closet.

Opposite the kitchen is a long bench with storage underneath, where she keeps a small fridge and the electrical system. A wall-mounted open shelf above the bench holds her favorite books and other knick-knacks. Here is also the corner dedicated to Taylor Swift, which includes a pink guitar and a small collection of the singer's albums. Behind the driver's seat, there is a full-height closet for the owner's clothes.

The sleeping space is at the back of the van and is comfortable enough for one person. A five-foot-long table pulls out from beneath the bed, and she uses it as a dining table or workspace. There are no windows in the van, but this has helped her feel more secure while parking inside big cities. The lack of an AC unit also means it can get pretty hot in the summer.

Tory's nomad lifestyle is supported by the solar power system on the roof wherever she goes. This lifestyle allows her to avoid being tied down with obligations and lets her explore the country on a whim. Tory has lived in the van and worked full-time as a digital nomad since 2021. In this timeframe, she has lived in various places, including California, Maine, New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts.

She is very proud of how the conversion turned out, but you know what they say, once you get the campervanning bug, you can never go back. Currently, she is working on a second van conversion, and with the experience she's gained while building the first, she hopes it will turn out even better.
