Mercedes has had a lot of time to experiment with all kinds of versions of the original G-Class. After all, it stayed in production for a few good decades until 2018, when the second generation came out.
Regardless of when it was built and what lies under the hood, the Mercedes G-Wagen has achieved cult status. You can find various examples in some of the most exclusive places on our planet, and you might also come across others should you venture through some of the most exciting off-road trails, as this is a proper 4x4 that can handle any terrain. On top of that, it is also the ride of choice for multiple military operators all over the world.

A favorite of the jet set when it comes to the Mercedes-AMG G 63, countless aftermarket modifications are available for it meant to turn it into anything from a mall crawler to an overlander. Power boosts are also on the menu, not that it needs them, anyway, and the three-pointed star themselves have upped the ante with a more rugged version christened the G 63 4x4 Squared, boasting improved off-road prowess, portal axles, and many other goodies that make the normal G-Class look like a child’s toy next to it.

Regarding what the best one ever made is, it varies depending on each individual’s taste. Some might argue that the 6x6 is the ultimate G-Wagen, whereas others would crown the modern-day G 63 as being the greatest. As for yours truly, the gold medal goes to the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet. And you can quickly see why when you remember that it was a limited-production model that doesn’t cut back on the off-roading prowess and boasts numerous luxury amenities, as well as an exclusive body.

This truck that sends luxury vibes was the first high-rider modified by Mercedes’ overhauled Maybach division. It came out in 2017 to send off the first-gen G-Class, and production was capped at just 99 units. And you surely won’t mistake it for anything else, given that it has a retractable rag-top section for the second half of the roof, providing backseat passengers with an open-top view of the sky above. They’re not just any seats either, as they were sourced from the S-Class and feature multiple adjustment settings, as well as massage functions.

Two tables fold out of the center console out back, and the vehicle also has thermal cup holders. A rear-seat entertainment system is also on deck should the backseat passengers cannot be bothered with looking out the window, and since the Stuttgart car marque wanted to emphasize its sporty nature too, in addition to the luxury side, it gave it some carbon fiber trim, as well. Overall, the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet is a chauffeur-driven high-riding limousine that can cope with all kinds of surfaces and has plenty of power to make the modern-day Mercedes-AMG G 63 jealous.

Under the hood lies a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine, which was sourced from the era’s G 65 AMG. It produces 630 hp (639 ps/470 kW) and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque, and that’s significantly more than the latest G 63’s 577 hp (585 ps/430 kW) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) produced by its bi-turbo 4.0L V8. It may be unpolite to ask such a ride how fast it is to 60 mph (97 kph), though it’s been clocked at under six seconds, which is highly impressive for a vehicle that weighs as much as a small shed and it’s shaped like one, too.

Coming across one that’s barely seen any action is probably harder than finding a needle in a haystack. However, we just did, as the pictured example is said to have only 280 miles (450 km) under its belt. Dressed in black and featuring brown leather upholstery and all the goodies you’d expect to find on such a machine, it was first registered in August of 2018, and despite getting ready to blow six candles off its birthday cake, it is still a brand-new ride.

Back in the day, when the G 650 Landaulets first started hitting the used car market, it was quite common to see various examples being listed for grabs for some $1.5 million. In the meantime, their value has gone down to the point where you might land one for a six-digit sum. Speaking of the Benjamins, this one is €940,000, which equals to a little over one million dollars at todaýs exchange rates.

You can find it on Hollmann International here, and we think if you can afford it, you should go right ahead and buy it, as chances are you will never come across a barely-driven example ever again. I know I would buy it in a heartbeat. Now, where’s that rich uncle that I don’t have?
