The Porsche 928 Grand Tourer Comes Back as a Taycan EV Sibling in Fantasy Land

It's interesting to note that Porsche, once seen as a very uptight, focused model manufacturer, has chosen to break so many conventions in its modern years – while at the same time also upholding the legacy of the 911 series.
They started breaking the trend with the Porsche Cayenne – a big gamble related to the humongous potential of luxury crossover SUVs. That bet paid off big time, and now they also have the smaller Macan on sale, a saloon model (Panamera), a fully electric sedan (Taycan), and even an off-road Porsche 911 (Dakar). At the same time, they are extending the ICE-powered-only lease of life of the main 911 series as long as they can.

Not long now and they'll be like Ford – which doesn't shy away from being the only automaker with an affordable V8-powered machine in its stable – Porsche might be the last Mohican sporting a boxer-six engine in the back of a car with RWD or AWD when everyone else is hybrid, PHEV, or fully electric. But that doesn't mean Porsche is afraid to go and live the zero-emissions lifestyle. The upcoming Macan EV-only is a big statement, and so will the 718s when they also convert to battery power.

Meanwhile, the Cayenne is slated to go EV sometime before the end of the decade, probably as close to the 2030s as possible. At the same time, the Taycan is expected to go toe-to-toe with the Tesla Model S Plaid when the refreshed version comes out sporting a 1,000-hp variant, according to the rumor mill. But what about those seeking zero-emissions redemption and wanting to go around town and at the local racetrack with something sporting just two doors?

Well, if Porsche doesn't give them anything in the real world, the imaginative realm of digital car content creators will undoubtedly oblige. For example, as per popular request, Rain Prisk, the virtual artist better known as rainprisk on social media, who likes to revolutionize legendary models with his signature, edgy or flowing styling, has cooked up a Porsche 928 revival.

The nameplate was used in the real world for a 2+2 grand touring fastback coupe made by Porsche between 1977 and 1985 with an uncharacteristic V8 front-engine rear-wheel drive layout. Although it never fulfilled its purpose of retiring the 911 series, at least among Porsche enthusiasts, it was still quite successful as a proper GT flagship.

Now, over across the parallel universes of vehicular CGI, the pixel master has decided the revived Porsche 928 must keep the original's DNA and still look like it was built in 2024, not the 1980s. As such, it borrows the DNA of the all-electric Taycan, but the artist also "made it shorter and moved the whole cabin back to give it a longer front end." So, do you like it?
