Lancia has been a brand with a single model for years. The Italians are still counting on the Ypsilon to show them the way to an expanded lineup. They are now teasing a special edition based on the upcoming generation, which will be electric.
The Lancia Ypsilon Edizion Limitata Cassina will be, just as the name implies, a limited edition and will come as the debut variant of the next generation.

Struggling with financial issues and a shrunk lineup, long gone are the days of motor racing glory with the Lancia Fulvia, Stratos, Delta, or 037. The Ypsilon has been on the market for 12 whole years and is finally getting redesigned. A new integration of the subcompact model will arrive in February 2024. An official teaser reveals the imminent arrival of the EV-only Edition Limitata Cassina.

Hidden under the dark-colored cover, the Ypsilon does not show much. But we can indeed guess there is a short hood underneath and a swept backward front grille, which should be flanked by headlights with a new light signature.

There will be a “tavolino” on board, which is Italian for “small table,” referring to the circular-shaped item placed between the front seats. The Ypsilon Edition Limitata Cassina will have one, too, covered in what seems to be blue leather. With the presence of the tavolino, Lancia wants to give future owners the sensation that they are at home on board the car.

For this special edition, Lancia teamed up with Cassina, an Italian firm that specializes in high-end furniture. It is not the first time the two entities get together. They have also worked on the Pu+Ra HPE, a radical concept car, which, Lancia said, was set to preview the upcoming design of the brand’s models. Or model, since the Lancia has been the only one in the line for years.

The Italians will only build 1,906 examples of the limited-edition Ypsilon, a number chosen as a tribute to the 117th anniversary of the brand. This variant will only be available as an EV, but the Ypsilon will come with an internal combustion engine integrated in a mild-hybrid powertrain.

Therefore, the upcoming third-generation Ypsilon will be the brand’s first EV as well as the brand’s last ICE-powered car. Lancia is going electric in 2028.

We are to see the new model in February 2024. Before that happens, Lancia promises to come up with details about it over the coming weeks. Sales should start sometime next summer. The subcompact car will roll off the assembly line in Zaragoza, Spain, alongside the Opel Corsa.

Lancia will expand its lineup with the Gamma electric crossover in 2026. The carmaker will revive the Delta nameplate with a hatchback set to arrive in 2028.
