The 2024 Volkswagen Passat is here as a wagon-only model. The ninth generation brings new tech, better electric range for the plug-in hybrid version, plus new seats on board.
Over 34 million. That is how many people bought a Volkswagen Passat during the 50 years the model has been on the market. It is the best-selling Volkswagen of all time after the super popular Golf and ahead of the charismatic Beetle.

The Passat rides on an updated version of the MQB evo architecture. Volkswagen has worked on two completely new plug-in hybrid drives, eHybrid, for a total system output of 201 horsepower (204 PS) or 268 horsepower (272 PS), respectively. A 19.7-kWh battery pack stores enough energy for 62 miles (100 kilometers).

The Germans claim that would be enough for everyday electric driving. According to a study carried out by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport, 95% of the drives are shorter than 50 kilometers (31 miles), while 99% are below 62 miles (100 kilometers).

An electric motor works alongside the turbocharged 1.5 TSI evo2 engine. Volkswagen rolls out, for the first time in the Passat lineup, a version with a 48 V mild hybrid, the eTSI, with 148 horsepower (150 PS).

There will also be two turbo petrol engines versions, powered by the 2.0 TSI, with 201 horsepower (204 PS) and 261 horsepower (265 PS), respectively.

The diesel die-hards can go for the 121-horsepower (122 PS), the 146-horsepower (150 PS), or the 190-horsepower (193 PS) variant.

The dual-clutch seven-speed DSG automatic transmission is standard for the 2024 Volkswagen Passat, while the 4Motion all-wheel drive system is only available for the 190-horsepower and 261 horsepower versions, with all the others coming with front-wheel drive.

The Germans claim they have completely redesigned the cabin of the wagon. A landscape display showed up on board, with the latest generation of the MIB operation system. Newly developed ergoActive Plus seats with pneumatic ten-chamber pressure point massage function provide extra comfort during the trip.

The carmaker extended the wheelbase by 1.96 inches (50 mm) to provide more legroom for those sitting in the rear seats. The wagon offers what only wagons can: 1,920 liters of luggage space.

For improved dynamics, Volkswagen fitted the car with adaptive chassis control DCC Pro.

The 2024 Volkswagen Passat is going to make global debut at the IAA Mobility in Munich, taking place this September. That is when Volkswagen will reveal all the details of the new Passat. The estate will hit the market in the first quarter of 2024.

The Germans will build the Passat at the plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, alongside its Czech sister, Skoda Superb. They decided to move the model from its usual production center in Emden, Germany, to make room for the production of the ID.4 and ID.7.
