The moose test has claimed the integrity of numerous vehicles over the years. Replicating what happens when you swerve to avoid an obstacle in the middle of the road and then try to return to the initial lane with another turn of the wheel, the infamous assessment has made yet another victim: the 2024 BMW X5.
Unveiled at the beginning of the year, it is a mid-cycle refresh of the fourth generation that brings a subtle visual makeover, the curved display inside, and a bit more power. The xDrive30d enjoys 298 ps (294 hp/219 kW) from its 3.0L turbodiesel, taking 6.1 seconds to hit 100 kph (62 mph) and returning between 8.2 and 7.1 l/100 km (28.7-33.1 US mpg).

As standard, this model comes with 19-inch wheels but can also be equipped with larger sets of 20, 21, and 22 inches. The one subjected to the moose test by Km77 had 21-inch alloys wrapped in 275/40 front and 315/35 rear Pirelli P Zero tires. It weighs nearly 2.3 tons (~5,000 lbs), and at almost 5 meters long (2,975 mm/117.1 in), it is a big boy.

So, how did it perform in the infamous challenge? Not that well, as it failed to return to the initial lane at 77 kph (48 mph), which is the minimum norm in the test signed by Km77. The Spanish YouTube channel noted that the BMW X5 tends to understeer, and they had to lower the entry speed to 72 kph (45 mph) and put it in Sport to keep it away from the cones.

Mind you, it's not a disastrous result, but it's not good either - and it went for the camera operators at one point. Truth be told, we had greater expectations from the executive crossover that goes against the likes of the Mercedes GLE and Audi Q7. On a different note, it didn't disappoint in the slalom test, as it completed it in 23.7 seconds. That is identical to the BMW 3 Series Touring in the M340d xDrive configuration and the Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+. The Cupra Born was one-tenth quicker, and with 21.5 seconds, the Porsche Taycan GTS tops the podium.

Now, it is worth noting that the versions sold in the United States should behave similarly to Europe's diesel-powered X5 put to the test by Km77. The US lineup comprises the rear-wheel drive 40i, with its 375 hp (380 ps/280 kW) 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-six, which starts at $65,200. The xDrive AWD system is a $2,300 option here.

With an MSRP of $72,500, the plug-in hybrid xDrive50e follows it, enjoying a total of 483 hp (490 ps/360 kW). The M60i adds a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 with 523 hp in return for $89,300, before destination, and the X5 M Competition tops them all with 617 hp (625 ps/460 kW) and a $122,300 MSRP.
