Even though it’s been a long time since the media caught wind of the project, Ford hasn’t yet confirmed the electric F-150 pickup truck's official name. Electric or EV would be the easiest way to differentiate the combustion-engined workhorse from the newcomer, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggests a third candidate.
Discovered by Ford Authority, the E-150 is curiously listed on the federal agency’s website as a 2021 model year. The Blue Oval has already confirmed the all-electric workhorse for the middle of 2022, most likely as a 2023 model if deliveries of the half-ton pickup will start by year’s end.
On the other hand, this nomenclature presents two problems. If you glance over the Dearborn-based automaker’s current lineup, the E-Series Cutaway is listed from $33,630, excluding freight. Available in E-350 and E-450 guises, the commercial vehicle may also welcome a half-ton member at some point in the future. No prizes will be awarded to who guesses how that fellow will be called because Ford has previously offered an E-150 van.
E-Series passenger and cargo vans were discontinued in 2014 with the arrival of the Transit, but bringing the E-150 name back for the electric F-150 would clash with the E-350 and E-450 Cutaway. And that’s not all.
If you search for the 2021 Ford E-150 on Ford Parts, you’ll also notice that we’re dealing with an Econoline that doesn’t actually exist. Alas, I am just as confused as you probably are about Ford Authority’s report.
But E-150 does make sense when you think about it. The cited publication mentions the E-Transit and Mustang Mach-E, so why wouldn’t the F-150 with two electric motors be called E-150 in order to keep it simple?
According to an official statement from FoMoCo, you can look forward to “the most powerful F-150 yet,” more powerful than the all-new Raptor. Oh, and by the way, the E-150 also features independent rear suspension.
