It hasn't been that long since word of the electric semi truck Tesla was preparing got out, so when Elon Musk announced the company would hold a presentation at the end of September, we were a bit surprised.
Of course, just because we found out relatively recently, that doesn't mean the battery-powered truck hadn't secretly been in development for much longer. Well, we don't know about the past, but we did find out just now that it will remain under wraps for at least one more month as Musk tweeted the postponement of the event.
Just as we were getting used to Tesla sticking to its self-imposed deadlines after the Model 3 initial presentation and the debut of its deliveries, the manufacturer reverts to its old habits and pushes back the preview date for the Semi truck.
However, that doesn't mean that Musk missed the opportunity to build up the hype around his company's new product. "Tesla Semi truck unveil & test ride tentatively scheduled for Oct 26th in Hawthorne," the Tweet read. "Worth seeing this beast in person. It's unreal."
Musk was far from shy in describing the electric truck's capabilities in the past, but it's the first time he's used such un-engineering-like adjectives. From the little we know so far about the vehicle, it is said to use several Model 3 motors for power, while unconfirmed sources say the maximum range will be in the 300 miles region.
After a short test drive in a car park, Musk said the big rig felt "like a sports car," but while that sounds exciting for people like you and me who have no interest in the freighting business, those who do are much more interested in the real-world range, operating costs, and a concrete release date.
The latter has not been changed so far and is still slated for early to mod 2019. At the same time, a lot can happen the remaining months, so don't make any plans based on that. We'll know more after the October 26 event and maybe we'll even get to see if the Tesla Semi can actually win a tug-of-war competition against any diesel truck while going uphill, as Musk claimed. That would be the best presentation ever.
