Tesla is going to have a "German" car. The so-called Model 2, with an official name not yet established, is reportedly going to roll off the production line at Giga Berlin, according to an unnamed source citing Elon Musk.
The Tesla CEO has been talking about an affordable Tesla for ages. The upcoming EV should be called the Model 2, but there is no official information on the designation. The name would make sense since the 2 will slot below the 3 and will be the cheapest of the entire lineup.

The Model 2 should cost around 25,000 euros, which translates to $26,804, before any governmental tax credit.

Elon Musk has recently visited the Giga Berlin and confirmed that the EV will be manufactured there, according to Reuters, citing an unnamed source.

But he gave no information on the moment the model will enter production. The Gigafactory near Berlin currently builds the Model Y crossover, Europe’s best-selling EV. Therefore, the Model 2 would be the second Tesla to be built in Europe.

The German plant should ramp up production and hit the one million cars per year milestone. There is no information on how many cars the facility is producing right now, but back in March, factory representatives claimed that 5,000 units rolled out the production lines every week, which adds up to a total of around 250,000 per year.

The arrival of the subcompact EV will coincide with the introduction of new methods of vehicle production, first explored with the development of the Cybertruck. They are supposed to reduce factory footprint by 40% and lead to cost savings of up to 50%.

As reported by Reuters, the EV maker is closing in on an innovation that would allow the die casting of the entire underbody of the model in just one piece, as Elon Musk originally planned back in 2022, when he first mentioned an affordable car for the European market.

Musk arrived in Germany after his high-profile visit to the United Kingdom, where he had a conversation with Prime Minister Rishi Sunk about the future of artificial intelligence.

The most affordable Tesla will fight the cheap Chinese cars

The average price of an electric car in Europe in the first half of 2023 was over 65,000 euros ($69,662), according to research carried out by JATO Dynamics.

When originally planned, the so-called Model 2 did not have much of a competition in Europe. But the Chinese car industry has been injecting the European market with cheap EVs like the BYD Dolphin or the MG4 EV, for instance.

Volkswagen is also working on a subcompact car, the ID.2, while the Renault 5 is scheduled to enter production in 2024.

Right now, the most affordable Tesla is the Model 3. The facelifted version, the only one available currently available in Europe, starts at 42,990 euros ($46,077) in Germany.

The subcompact Tesla will not be available in the United States.
