Tesla fitted the Cybertruck with "armored glass" windows able to resist stone chips and even Class 4 hail. However, it's not exactly shatterproof, as promised during the 2019 launch event. A recent Sentry Mode video shows that the armored glass windows are tough enough to resist a break-in attempt, although not without damages.
Tesla made headlines in 2019 when it proved that the armored glass windows of the Cybertruck can shatter when hit with a metal ball. However, most of the initial claims about the toughness of Cybertruck's windows have made it into the production vehicle. The Cybertruck windows may not be entirely shatterproof, but they are able to sustain mild shocks even when hit with a steel ball. We've already seen this proved in a recent video, and it's clear that the Cybertruck's windows are harder to break than any regular automotive glass on current vehicles.

With the Cybertruck still a new model, it's easy to overlook its qualities despite people making desperate efforts to prove them. Somebody even edited an old video showing a burglar trying to break a side window only to be hit by the brick bouncing back from the protected glass. There's no need to do this, as there's plenty of evidence that the Cybertruck windows can withstand such abuse. This was recently demonstrated in a Sentry Model video showing a criminal's efforts to break into the truck.

The video shared by Tesla owner and content creator Arash Malek on X shows an attempted break-in gone wrong. Despite the burglar's best efforts, including using a glass tool and jumping on the Cybertruck's roof, the armored glass didn't break. However, as seen in the pictures accompanying the video, several windows and the glass roof cracked, which means they will need replacement.

The incident caught the attention of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who bragged about the Cybertruck being "the finest in apocalypse defense technology." More than that, Musk made the thief famous by sharing the break-in attempt with his 174 million followers. However, not everyone was convinced the armored glass did any better for the Cybertruck owner. Sure, it fended off a break-in attempt and kept the owner's belongings from being stolen. On the other hand, it might have caused more damage than regular glass.

Had the glass broken on the first attempt, the thief would've left quickly, and only one window would have been damaged. Instead, the Cybertruck owner has to replace several side windows, not to mention the glass roof. While the side windows are relatively inexpensive to replace, at $200-$260 apiece, the glass roof is likely a lot more costly. We don't know the exact price, but it's likely more expensive than the windshield, which costs $1,900, excluding tax and labor.

However, the biggest problem is not the price but availability. Tesla is still ramping up production, and spare parts are an issue. When it comes to such components that rarely need replacement, the wait time is unknown but undoubtedly lengthy. The good news is that the windows can still be used until replacement, unlike regular automotive glass, which usually shatters into thousands of pieces and needs immediate replacement.
