Tesla was forced to halt Cybertruck deliveries after discovering a safety issue. According to several sources, the accelerator pedal cover may separate and get stuck behind a dashboard trim, causing an unintended acceleration problem. This is believed to have been the cause of several crashes.
Tesla is expected to ramp up Cybertruck production to meet the exceptional demand for the outlandish pickup. However, things don't look too good at the moment. Many Cybertruck reservation holders scheduled for delivery in the past days received a message from Tesla notifying them of an "unexpected delay." Although Tesla did not tell exactly what caused the delays, the Tesla community has actively shared insight into what caused the delays.

The stop sales order has been reportedly issued after discovering a design problem with the accelerator pedal. This may have been made worse by the floor-mounted accelerator pedal. This is unique in the Tesla lineup, all other models featuring a hanging accelerator pedal. The floor-mounted pedal requires the driver to put their entire foot on the pedal instead of just the top of the foot. Pressure must also be applied in a forward-upward direction.

The Cybertruck pedals have metal covers, and Tesla used adhesive instead of fasteners to secure the covers in place. However, due to oil contamination during production, the cover can shift out of position when the foot applies forward pressure on the accelerator. When the cover extends upwards, it can reach a trim piece from the dashboard and get stuck underneath it. This causes an unintended acceleration problem that can lead to a crash.

The pedal cover assembly shows that cutting costs on safety-related components can lead to safety hazards. A simple fastener could've prevented this whole drama, keeping everything secured in place. As Tesla is figuring out a fix, the Cybertruck deliveries are halted. Reports indicate that deliveries could be resumed by the end of the week.

There have been several unexplained crashes recently, where the drivers claimed that the Cybertruck "failed to break." One of the most famous was the Cybertruck crashing at the Beverly Hills Hotel entrance in March. However, few details about this crash have been revealed, so it's hard to conclude that the accelerator pedal was to blame. However, another crash seems to describe exactly this issue.

Earlier this month, a Cybertruck driver claimed they raised the foot off the accelerator pedal when approaching a curve. However, the truck did not slow down as expected, missing the turn and hitting a light pole. The driver also says they tried to press the brakes but didn't engage. This is weird, considering that Teslas have a brake override that would cut the power when pressing the brake pedal. However, people who use one-pedal driving are less aware that they might press the accelerator instead of the brake pedal. This is a common mistake that has caused several crashes.
