Tesla Communications VP Quits. Is There Something Rotten in Palo Alto?

We've said this before - and we're not alone - but we're going to say it again: the Model 3 could be the car that makes or breaks Tesla, now that the company has invested so many resources in coming up with what will be its first mass market product. So, yeah, no pressure there, Tesla.
In spite of the huge attention it's been getting - owning a new Tesla for just $35,000 (excluding incentives)? No wonder all the EV freaks are fretting with excitement - the Palo Alto company has been successful in keeping most information about the new car secret. We'd imagine the security conditions at the Tesla HQ would put an airport terminal to shame, but that's the price you have to pay if you want to work for one of the trendiest employers of the moment, we guess.

However trendy Tesla is, some people decide that it's not where they want to be right now, so they write their resignation letter and move on looking for something new. That's perfectly natural for any company, and sometimes it's the more important names that feel like they need a change of air too, nothing wrong with that.

Still, having your global communication vice president quit just a few weeks ahead of what could very well be the most important event so far, that says something. Surely, had Ricardo Reyes, the man who had this position until today, found a better job, I'm sure his new employers would have understood and would have agreed to wait for him until after the Hawthorn Studio event on March 31.

But that doesn't appear to be the case. Mr. Reyes was in no hurry to update his LinkedIn profile with a new job, instead suggesting on Twitter that he'll take part in the Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship later this week (where we wish him the best of luck). This doesn't make him look like a man quitting his job for a better one, but one that's in need of a vacation. One that involves melee fighting, nevertheless.

The Model 3 preview event will go as planned, and nobody will probably feel the absence of the communication VP - that's not the issue here. Since Mr. Reyes refused to comment on his decision, given the odd timing of the departure, we can only speculate that it was determined either by a conflict with someone higher up the hierarchy or by his decision not to be part of Tesla Motors anymore, starting immediately. Bloomberg reports that a Tesla spokesman has confirmed Mr. Reyes does not work for the company anymore.
