As the Tesla Cybertruck is nearing its official launch, everyone expects it to be the best pickup truck on the market. These hopes were dealt a massive blow as one release-candidate Cybertruck was spotted with the hazard lights on in the middle of Interstate 580 in Richmond. Moments later, the same truck was covered with a silver tarp and appeared abandoned on the median.
Every car model involves a great deal of testing before entering series production, and the Cybertrucks is no exception. For the past year, we've seen many prototypes in various stages of development testing on public roads and at testing facilities around the world. Not every encounter was flattering for Tesla, as some revealed some Cybertruck weaknesses. Still, there were no significant issues to report most of the time.

This shows that Tesla got more mature in developing new car models. It wasn't always the case, as the Tesla Semi had its fair share of failures last year. On many occasions, the Tesla Semi was spotted on the side of the road or even blocking a highway on-ramp after it reportedly broke down. According to insider reports, many problems were caused by software glitches affecting various parts, including the cockpit screens that controlled all the truck's functions.

That's not to say that the Cybertruck was flawless. We've reported several occasions when the Cybertruck didn't behave as expected. Sometimes, it was electrical problems. Other times, it was less than stellar off-road performance. According to Electrek, one Tesla Cybertruck prototype was spotted in August on the side of a road in California with a cover on it after the crew left it there. It appears that this is standard procedure at Tesla, as we now have seen images of another Cybertruck that was abandoned.

The significant difference this time is that the truck was left in the middle of a busy interstate, albeit outside of the active lanes, on the median. One video shared on Reddit shows the Cybertruck stopped with the hazard lights on while a young man was waiting in the car, supposedly waiting for instructions. Minutes later, another driver took a picture of the same truck, this time covered with a silver tarp. No driver or a tow truck was in sight, which prompted speculations about the Cybertruck and the danger it posed to other drivers.

The incident happened in Richmond, California, on the I-580 during rush hour. One Redditor said that he saw the same truck on the I-880, which means it could've been testing around the Tesla Fremont factory. The truck was one of the Release Candidates, and it had Texas plates. Many criticized the driver's decision to cover the truck and flee the scene by crossing the divider and the four lanes of traffic. Later, the pickup was loaded on a flatbed and removed from the site.

I don't know how long it was there, but being in the middle of a busy freeway made it stick like a sore thumb. Hundreds of people drove past it and, given its unique shape, even with the tarp on, it was a loud statement about Tesla's reliability. If this is the publicity that Tesla fans were hoping for, it's not going to be appreciated.
