The world-acclaimed Taipei, Taiwan-based e-mobility specialist has introduced the Orox, a heavy-duty, all-terrain cargo e-bike perfect for adventures off the beaten path and massive hauls thanks to a powerful mid-drive Bosch motor, a carrying capacity of 220 pounds (100 kg), and over 180 miles (300 km) of range.
Tern is better known in the e-mobility scene for its reliable urban cargo e-bikes that can be used to take children to school, run daily errands, haul groceries, and more. With the new Orox, the premium e-bike manufacturer has taken a different direction, targeting riders who love outdoor exploration and are seeking a sturdy electric backpacking, trekking, or touring rig.
This is an electric bike that proves designers can still push the boundaries to create innovative two-wheelers that defy expectations for what an e-bike can do. From bike trips with the whole family to solo adventures in the backcountry, the new Orox adventure cargo bike promises to revolutionize the way we explore the outdoors.

After introducing the urban cargo e-bike GSD six years ago, the company realized that "there are plenty of places people want to go that are unpaved. And they want to bring their gear. For those trips, we made the Orox," as per their statement. "Combining the ruggedness of a mountain bike, versatility of a trekking bike, and utility of a cargo bike, Orox provides riders the freedom to craft their own unique experiences."
It boasts a rugged design that allows it to take on challenging terrains and is packed full of impressive features. First off, it's worth mentioning that the Orox is a Class 2 e-bike, meaning it only comes with a pedal assist system (no throttle). Powering it is a Bosch Performance Line CX motor system that produces 85 Nm of torque and offers up to 340% assistance. This is Bosch's highest-performing motor and helps the Orox reach a top speed of 20 mph (32 kph).
Fitted with a massive Bosch 800 Wh battery, the e-bike will offer a range of 100 miles (161 km). But the Orox is dual-battery compatible, so adding one more battery leads to an impressive 186-mile (300-km) range on a single charge, meaning you can ride longer and head deeper into the backcountry. An e-bike with such a long range opens up a lot of options for adventure, and since the design allows easy access to the battery pack, riders who want to explore even further can carry additional batteries to swap them and continue exploring. Moreover, the Frame Pack feature ensures the battery is protected and insulated, so performance won't be affected by outside temperatures.

The Orox's frame and fork are engineered to allow swapping between different wheel and tire sizes with ease, with available options including 27.5 x 4", 29 x 3", and even extra-wide 26 x 5" fat bike tires for effortlessly floating over snow and sand. Full-coverage fenders on both wheels will keep the rider and the bike clean regardless of the terrain and weather conditions.
The Atlax X cargo wheels and double-wall tires, coupled with the mighty motor, make carrying heavy loads across difficult terrain considerably easier.
Speaking of hauling abilities, the Orox excels in this department. It's a genuine heavy-duty powerhouse with a maximum gross weight of 462 pounds (210 kg) on pavement and 397 pounds (180 kg) for off-road riding. With front and rear racks, riders will be able to carry gear, camping equipment, supplies, and even passengers.
Tern offers a wide array of accessories to customize your bike depending on your needs and turn it into the ultimate hauling companion, including huge waterproof panniers, coolers, tents, a heavy-duty trail rack, stow decks for larger and heavier cargo, and more. Moreover, the two-wheeler comes with a frame-integrated TowBar that allows you to link a passenger, cargo, or pet trailer to the bike.

Perhaps the only downside is that the cargo e-bike doesn't come with a suspension fork, which would have enhanced the off-road riding experience, but the company says this is due to the lack of suspension forks on the market certified to the maximum capacity of the Orox.
The adventure e-bike will be made available in two frame sizes, accommodating riders from 155 cm to 195 cm (5' 1" to 6' 5"). Buyers will be able to choose between several configurations, including one with a chain-driven Shimano XT 12-speed derailleur and another with a Gates belt drive paired with a 14-speed Rohloff Speedhub.
Considering all that it has to offer, the Tern Orox adventure e-bike is priced competitively at t $6,499 / €6,799. It is expected to become available in Europe and North America this April, and the company plans to expand to other markets later in the year.
