With their ability to carry large loads, lower transportation costs for both individuals and businesses, and eco-friendly nature, electric cargo bikes represent a transformative device in the urban mobility scene and could replace cars for short distances. The new Gazelle Makki Travel offers everything environmentally conscious commuters are looking for - an eye-pleasing look, a powerful Bosch motor, large load capacity, and ABS for ultra-safe braking.
Gazelle Bikes, a Dutch company with over 130 years of history in bike manufacturing, has built a reputation for producing incredibly comfortable city bikes with exceptional quality, but it has recently dived into cargo two-wheelers as well. The brand revealed its first cargo bike in 2021, named the Makki Load, and now it's expanding the offering with a new and improved version - the Makki Travel.

Designed with functionality in mind, the new model is an easy-to-handle, front-loading cargo e-bike for modern families. It is perfect for the school run, carrying grocery bags and lunch boxes, and comes with plenty of accessories that make it a good alternative to a second car.

The Makki Travel can carry up to three children in the front carrier, with a maximum permitter weight of 250 kg (550 lbs), but cycling with such heavy loads has never been easier thanks to the powerful Cargo central motor from Bosch that produces 85 Nm of torque and makes even uphill rides with your children in front a relaxing and enjoyable riding experience.

The torquey motor will be fed by your choice of battery, with 400, 545, and 800 Wh Bosch Lithium-ion options available. The basic 400 Wh battery will offer 50 km (31 miles) of range in Eco mode, while the 800 Wh unit promises up to 90 km (56 miles) of autonomy. Regardless of the capacity you choose, the battery is securely attached to the frame with a lock and can easily be removed for charging on or off the bike.

Since transporting children is one of the main uses Gazelle Bikes had in mind for the Makki Travel, the bike was built with a high-walled box that ensures safety. It is made from Expanded Polypropylene (EPP), an impact-resistant material similar to that used inside bike helmets. The recess in the middle of the carrier and a built-in step make it easy for kids to get in and out, while the belted seats ensure safety while cycling.

The cargo bike has a modern design with a two-tone gray and black color palette and is built around an aluminum frame for a lightweight design (it tips the scales at 54.5 kg or 120 lbs). It also comes with hydraulic disc brakes, puncture-resistant tires, and a handy twin-legged stand that is easily engaged with a simple foot push. This makes it easy to park in a stable position when you need to get the children off or unload packages.

With the advancements in battery technology and incredible diversity on the urban mobility scene, it really feels like the right time for e-cargo bikes to take over as a fun and reliable mode of moving people and goods. The Gazelle Makki Travel is a good option, though some might find it a bit pricey at €6,699 (around $7,170) with a 400 Wh battery. If you add a few accessories, like a car seat adapter, a rain cover, and a storage drawer, the price will easily go over the €7,000 mark ($7,500). The new cargo bike will be available for purchase from April.
