Over twenty years ago, long before anyone could even dream electrified vehicles would become trendsetters, Japanese carmaker Toyota made a big gamble with a car called Prius. It was the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle, one that would soon enter the modern culture and sell like crazy.
Almost 23 years and over 6 million Priuses later, when technologies far more advanced than that of the original hybrid are around, the model soldiers on with enough force to make the carmaker releases a commemorative version.

“Twenty years ago, with the Y2K computer glitch reduced to the punchline of the year, technology in another corner took a mammoth leap as a small, unassuming sedan very quietly rolled into U.S. Toyota dealerships,” the carmaker says in a statement.

“The 2001 Toyota Prius, the world’s first production hybrid car, had arrived, and it would profoundly change the trajectory of automotive propulsion evolution."

The Prius was launched in Japan in 1997, but entered the American market – its largest, with nearly 2 million units sold – in 2000. To mark the 20th anniversary of that moment, Toyota announced a special edition Prius.

Based on the 2021 Prius XLE FWD, the special edition will be built in a limited run of 2,020 units, sporting one of two special colors and a series of other unique features.

Wrapped in either Supersonic Red or the new Wind Chill Pearl, the 20th Anniversary Prius adds 17-inch wheels with black inserts, blackout headlights, B-pillars and mirror housings, and a 2020 insignia on the key glove/fob and floor mats.

Technology wise, the edition takes the Safety Sense system of ADAS technologies one step further and brings low-light pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist.

Pricing for this special Prius was not announced. Full details can be found in the press release section below.

This special version of the Prius is one of 11 electrified vehicles the carmaker has in the works for the 2021 model year. Two brand new Toyota hybrids are scheduled to be launched by the carmaker on May 18.
