Drag racing is always fun to watch, especially when the cars being raced are of different makes and from different categories – this is when we get to see the most unexpected results. But what happens when cars from the same family go at each other’s throats?
In the market of tuning some of the most exciting cars on the market, Texas-based Hennessey also likes to take to the track from time to time, to show all those interested what its added hardware does to a stock machine.

Their most recent exploits were centered on the C8 Corvette and what it can do – we’ve seen in drag race both a Lamborghini Huracan, and an older C7 in crazy displays of speed.

This time, the garage decided to pit one against the other two members of the Mustang family. And not just any Mustangs, but two Shelby GTs.

The first is a stock 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500, a model described at the time of its introduction as being the most powerful, fastest and advanced Ford model yet. Its rival, an older GT350, no longer in stock form, but modified by Hennessey with the HPE850 package.

The crew behind the race went to the track for more than just racing. The HPE850 package fitted on the blue GT350 is in its final testing stages, while the GT500, freshly arrived in the Texans’ garage, needed some baseline testing before modification for it begins.

In numbers, the race looked a bit like this: the GT500 came to the race with 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft (847 Nm) of torque, while its little brother brought, thanks to the modifications made, 858 horsepower and 673 lb-ft (912 Nm) of torque.

The difference is instantly visible on the track as well, where the GT350 shoots off like a champ when the two cars reached the start line, and beats the GT500 by a big margin.
