Subaru Official Says EJ25 Engine in 2015 WRX STI Has "Reached the Highest Point" 1 photo

On the face of it, 2014 seems to be a great year for Subaru fans in America, as Fuji HI's car division is putting a bit of pep in its step by launching brand new versions of the WRX and STI.
But while the WRX gets a brand new 2.0-liter turbo, its big brother makes use of the same-old 305 hp 2.5-liter boxer-4 to get about. Fans are calling it the biggest disappointment in decades, and we don't really blame them, as this is probably the first time when the WRX makes bigger changes than its big brother.

During a recent interview with Australian magazine CarAdvice, Subaru WRX project manager Masuo Takatsu said changes to the suspension or chassis were given much higher priority than the ones for the engine.

“[In regards to] the original EJ engine, we realised that we have sort of reached the peak and this is sort of the… we are not saying we have completed it, but it’s at the level that we can say that we have reached the highest point," Takatsu said at the STI's launch event in California.

We don't actually know what that actually means for the future of the STI, but keeping the old engine could, in the long run, end up biting Subaru under the wing. Reliability and sturdiness are one thing, but motorsport fans need something mind-blowing if they're to part with $35,000 for one of these cars.

Let's just hope that Mitsubishi's idea of turning the Evo into a hybrid doesn't catch on with the people who make the Impreza.
