Subaru Denies Mid-Engined Sportscar Development, STI Might Not Go Hybrid

A couple of weeks ago, Subaru was said to be cooking up something fascinating, a true sportscar with the engine behind the driver. However, the report was just refuted by the Subaru of America president and COO Tom Doll at the New York Auto Show.
It seems the boxer-engined rival for the Porsche 911 was indeed too good to be true, as the Japanese Automaker known for safety and all-wheel drive doesn't need an exotic halo model.

Speaking to members of the press, Tom Doll said the following during the reveal of the new Impreza: "I have not heard that, I don’t know what that is. I don’t know. I don’t know where they’re getting their information from. I would like to know their source, I really would."

The "they" in this case is US publication Car & Driver that cited a Subaru insider source as saying that a prototype with a mid-mounted turbocharged boxer engine was under development. What's more, it would have two electric motors powering the front wheels for a more instantaneous yet ecological output delivery.

While there's not going to be a 911 killer from Subaru, Australian magazine CarAdvice was able to confirm other hot projects. Fuji Heavy Industries CEO Yasuyuki Yoshinaga said that new WRX and STI would arrive around 2017 or 2018, based on the latest generation of Impreza (no particular body styles were mentioned).

However, Yoshinaga was in their words "baffled" by the question of whether these performance models would become hybrids as the rumors suggest. We have no problem with that at all!

While Subaru is preparing its mid-life facelift for the BRZ sports coupe to match that of Toyota, a successor has not yet been approved. But discussions are underway, and both parties seem very interested. "We are discussing with Toyota to produce a new model change for the BRZ. We have not decided any details yet, but we will make an agreement. We want to continue the BRZ," says Yoshinaga.
