Car enthusiasts in the US can still appreciate a Japanese sportscar. Looking back at the past decade or so, we see the market was littered with Eclipses, Skylines, RX-7s, the Nissan Zs and of course the Supra. Now though, everybody wants an SUV and going sideways isn’t considered fun any more, at least not in the mass market.
But Toyota and Subaru made an effort to bring the fun back, and the result is two cars that are affectionally called Toyobaru. Both the Subaru BRZ and the Toyota GT 86 are built at the Fuji Heavy Industries factory in the middle of Japan, and demand there has been through the roof there.
In the US, the BRZ is relatively affordable at a $25,495 starting price (not including destination). But with only about 6,000 expected to be brought to this market, you can already see a problem, can’t you?
Yes, dealers have already started asking a high premium for the car. According to Inside Line, one dealer is asking for a non-negociable $5000 increase over the base price on all his 20 cars.
Is that out of line considering this is a 200 hp car? This is definitely a supply problem hat Subaru will have to fix!
