Two and a half years after Stellantis presented its electrification strategy, the Italian-American-French automaker has finally detailed the STLA Large platform that underpins the all-new Charger. Everyone was looking forward to at least one internal combustion engine option (in the form of the Hurricane twin-turbo I6 driving the Charger's rear wheels via the ZF 8HP torque-converter automatic), but curiously enough, this platform also supports front-wheel-drive transverse applications.
Be it longitudinal or transverse, Stellantis further confirmed all-wheel drive. For the time being, it's not clear whether all-wheel drive is made possible by a mechanical system (think Haldex for transverse and Torsen for longitudinal applications) or an electric motor. In Europe, the French part of Stellantis – namely Groupe PSA – uses a rear-mounted electric motor in front-biased vehicles.

Given that Fiat Chrysler and Groupe PSA are joined at the hip, front-wheel-drive applications are likely to use the PSA EAT8 automatic, a torque-converter unit designed and produced by Toyota-controlled Aisin. In addition to purely ICE and electric muscle, Stellantis further confirmed hybrid powertrains.

Regarding the zero-emission side of things, the STLA Large is compatible with 400- and 800-volt batteries ranging between 85 and 118 kilowatt hours. Fast charging is rated at up to 4.5 kilowatt hours per minute for the 800-volt architecture, and Stellantis further sweetens the deal with up to 500 miles (approximately 800 kilometers) of driving range on a full charge.

"The STLA Large platform has the potential to carry extreme power that will outperform any of the existing Hellcat V8s," or so reads the press release attached below. Emphasis on potential. Remember the Maserati GranTurismo? Its Folgore powertrain is capable of delivering over 1,200 ponies, but due to battery tech limitations, the three-motor setup is limited to 760-odd ponies for the time being.

As for the existing Hellcat V8s part, one has to wonder if Stellantis referred to the Redeye specification of the Hellcat or the overly powerful Demon 170-spec Hellcat. In the latter's case, the Dodge brand promises 1,025 horsepower and 845 pound-feet (1,146 Nm) on E85. When properly equipped – and in ideal conditions – the Challenger Demon 170 can blitz to 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour) in 1.66 seconds. The most performance-oriented model based on the STLA Large will require 2-odd seconds from zero to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour).

Highly modular, the STLA Large will underpin vehicles from the D and E segments. From cars to crossovers and sport utility vehicles, it will cover pretty much everything. Stellantis lists the STLA Large with a wheelbase range of 113.0 to 121.1 inches (2,870 to 3,075 millimeters), as well as a ground clearance range of 5.5 to 11.3 inches (140 to 288 millimeters). Maximum tire diameter is 32.6 inches, which is Jeep territory. Speaking of which, both the off-road Recon and posher Wagoneer S will be based on the STLA Large.

In addition to Dodge, this platform is further intended for three other Stellantis brands. The list comprises Alfa Romeo (think next-generation Giulia and Stelvio, as well as a yet-unnamed large sport utility vehicle with three rows), Chrysler (next-generation 300 sedan), and Maserati (next-generation Levante and Quattroporte). It's quite sad that Lancia isn’t featured, but even with the backing of Groupe PSA and Fiat Chrysler, the Italian marque is merely a shadow of its former self.

Stellantis claims that the STLA Large will spawn eight models between 2024 and 2026, beginning with the 2025 Dodge Charger. Production will be handled by the Windsor assembly plant in Canada, whereas Brampton will be retooled for the next-gen Jeep Compass on the STLA Medium platform.
