Kia already sells a really small car with electric drive in Korea, the ray EV, but that is not fit for global consumption. However, in 2014 they will introduce an EV version of the Soul urban crossover vehicle, partially in order to meet the California electric car mandate, but also to meet increase demand for such cars from the global market.
The new Kia Soul EV will be equipped with a more powerful version of the Kia Ray EV’s 50 kW electric motor powered by a 16.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack located in the boot. Speculation suggest the car will reach 60 mph (98 km/h) in just 12 seconds and provide a maximum range of 124 miles (200 km/h).
The Soul is all-new for the 2014 model year, having received fresh styling and a longer platform with more interior space. It should make quite the EV.
Expect the US market debut to come in 2014, with prices expected to be above $25,000.
Our spy photographers were able to spot the Kia Soul EV as it was undergoing testing. Camouflage covers a slightly revised front end, where a smaller lower grill will be installed. Other than that and a new set of wheels, it's pretty much the same car on the outside.
Electric hamster car anyone?
