There has been quite a bit of confusion surrounding a BMW prototype spotted around BMW’s main testing facilities around Germany. Some said that it’s the next 5 Series, some said it’s the 7 Series. This time, we’re sure we’re looking at the 2016 G11 7er.
This prototype was just spotted in Scandinavia, testing in extremely cold weather. Rumors say that the new model will have a completely revised hybrid version, in which case, testing it in snowy fields and at temperatures well below 0 degrees makes perfect sense.
However, the main line-up of engines will be made up of conventional, next generation 3-liter units. It’s possible to also witness the debut of the first 2-liter engine ever to be fitted on a 7 Series thanks to the lightweight construction of the 2016 model and the ever increasing power outputs of BMW’s modern motors.
Hopefully the Germans will also keep V8 and V12 units available, despite ever tightening CO2 emission laws. Expect the new model to be unveiled in 2015 with production starting early 2016 at the latest.
