Spyshots: 2016 BMW F48 X1

The front-wheel-drive trend, unfortunately, won’t stop at the 2 Series Active Tourer. The new BMW that will send its power to the front axle alone will be the upcoming F48 X1.

As you might’ve noticed, the similar codenames (F45 and F48) are not a coincidence in this instance, both cars using the new UKL platform that will be the basis for a lot of cars in BMW and MINI’s line-up.

The same story will apply to the drivetrains too, the new CUV presumably going to ‘borrow’ the same B-family of engines from the 2er, going for 1.5- and 2-liter units making from 136 to 231 HP, in both diesel and petrol variants.

However, the X1 will be slightly bigger than the Active Tourer but it will be lighter due to extensive usage of CFRP and other lightweight materials.

Official release dates haven’t been announced just yet but expect the veils to come off somewhere in 2015 with production starting towards 2016.
