Everyone knows that 'what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.' However, in this technologically advanced age when you're just a touch of a button away from becoming an Internet sensation (for good or worse), that perception is quite hard to follow – especially if your car stands out in any crowd from a mile away.
Arguably, sometimes it's a slow night even at the local quarter-mile dragstrip. And that is also valid for legendary venues like The Strip at The Las Vegas Motor Speedway, located in Clark County, Nevada. The iconic complex has multiple tracks for motorsports racing spread across 1,200 acres (490 ha), and it was opened in 1972, more than half a century ago.
Since then, it has entertained, dazed, and amazed crowds with its major series and events – NASCAR, IndyCar, Trans-Am Series, IMSA GT, AMA Superbike, and now even the Autonomous Challenger at CES are but a select few. The tracks, emnanwhile, include an Inside Road Course with an oval, an Outside Road Course with several configurations, The Bullring, a Dirt Track, a Dream Racing Course, an Off-Road Course, and also The Strip.
The latter, by the way, is one of the few four-lane quarter-mile dragstrips of the world. And, naturally, it attracts a lot of feisty contenders to racing glory. Some of them don't look like victorious warriors – but that's just a ruse, so they're called sleepers. Others go by the percept of 'what you see is what you get,' so they use stock cars and just race them to the limit. And a few also come with the stuff of dreams – highly modified vehicles that are essentially rockets on wheels.
But a select few also want to ensure they will be seen in any condition – fog, rain, snow, or night. Those are the folks who want to stand out in any crowd at all costs. And sometimes they don't even care that they might get embarrassed. Of course, perhaps, in their minds, they are still the rulers of the automotive world. Anyway, here's an eloquent example of how to first get your skills in order and only afterward tart your ride up, too.
The videographer behind the Wheels channel on YouTube, usually a fan of MRP and Bandimere Speedway, was recently at The Strip at The Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and his attention was thoroughly hooked on a couple of outrageous cars – a yellow-and-blue Martini-liveried Porsche 911 Carrera S and a white-red-black-gray Toyota GR Supra with the Toyota Gazoo Racing Trophy corporate palette.
By the looks of those cars, complete with cool rims and big rear wings, the Porsche and Toyota should be flying down the quarter-mile dragstrip, right? Well, always expect the unexpected at these races – that's a good mantra. And, on this occasion, the surprise was on us – these two drivers were as inexperienced as they were adept at showing off!
As such, after much trial and tribulation when arranging the cars at the burnout box and on the start line, they did perform a couple of (slow) passes. The first race wrapped with 13.37s versus 14.11s elapsed times, while the second one wasn't all that more impressive: 12.54s versus 13.52s. Now, if you're still curious, check out the footage to see who took the laurels in each case.
