Skoda has showcased the VisionS concept study at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.
The exhibit gives us a preview of the first large SUV in the brand’s history. The VisionS will be turned into a seven-seat SUV when it becomes a production model. Until then, the concept features three-row seating for six people. Naturally, this configuration will not go into production under the Skoda badge for practical reasons.
The 4.7-meter long vehicle has a generous 2.79-meter wheelbase to accommodate its passengers. Skoda claims to have designed the VisionS with inspiration from Czech Cubism and traditional Bohemian crystal art.
The result is a fresh design for Skoda, with many lines that haven’t been seen before from the Czech brand. It is relatively easy to achieve this, as Skoda has only had one SUV in its range, the Yeti.
The new VisionS concept is also Skoda’s first plug-in hybrid model. It features a 1.4-liter TSI gasoline turbocharged engine, mated to a set of electric motors.
The internal combustion unit provides 156 HP and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft), while the e-units develop 40 kW and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft), and 85 kW and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) for the second motor. The three engines work together or as a team of two to provide emission-free driving, four-wheel drive, and hybrid operation modes.
The car can drive up to 50 kilometers (31 miles) on electric power and boasts a combined range of 1,000 kilometers (620 miles). Fuel consumption is rated at 1.9 liters of gasoline for 100 kilometers (123.8 mpg), while top speed is of almost 200 km/h (124 mph). The 0-100 km/h (62 MPH) time is good for a vehicle this big - just 7.4 seconds.
Skoda’s future SUV is reportedly named Kodiak and will come to market sometime next year. The car will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB modular platform, for practical reasons.
