And here we thought the foolery of 2020 would be behind us for good. Days into the New Year, a driver from Russia wins major points for creativity but no actual Darwin Award for making his broken-down Skoda Rapid road-worthy.
“Road-worthy” might be a bit of an overstatement, though. A new viral video posted earlier this week by Viral Hog shows what appears to be a considerably damaged Skoda traveling at considerable speed on a mostly-empty road.
The vehicle’s rear is sitting on a trailer, but the trailer isn’t being towed: it is being used instead of the actual rear wheels. That is to say, whoever was driving this placed the car onto the trailer and then drove off, just like that. The Skoda is dinged on the sides, so it was presumably involved in some type of crash, rendering the rear wheels nonfunctional.
As is usual with this type of videos, there is little context offered, but this does seem to be a case worthy of the petrolheads at Garage54. The only, very obvious difference is that they would never be crazy enough to actually take a contraption like this one on the public road. They might be crazy in their approach to automotive engineering, but they wouldn’t be killing themselves for it.
The caption notes that this strange sighting was spotted on January 3, 2021, near Rostov-on-Don on the M-4 highway. You can see the video below, but word of caution, mute it before pressing play.
On a more serious note, as funny as this is to watch and as easy as “those crazy Russians…” jokes will undoubtedly come after seeing the video, never be this guy. Just because something sounds like a good idea doesn’t mean it necessarily is. Or, to put it differently, just because you can doesn’t mean you should.
