Skoda Octavia vRS Bonneville Special Hits New Record: 227 MPH

The Bonneville Speed Week is an adrenaline-packed event, but it doesn’t leave teams willing to put up with the danger for a chance at glory much time to get the speed they wanted. However, this is not the story with Skoda’s Octavia vRS Bonneville Special, a model that was built to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the iconic go-fast sedan from the Czech republic.

Last week, we brought you the news that a team of crack engineers have managed to 200 miles per hour (321.87 km/h) in a truly monstrous version of the regular car that your mom could drive. While the 202.15 mph (325.33 km/h) record run was deeply satisfying, it wasn’t enough for the team, as they were after much bigger salty fish.

On Friday, August 19th, the Skoda Octavia Bonneville Special officially became the fastest 2.0-litre turbocharged production car in the world when the 600 bhp ‘salt spec’ racer, when the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) validated a speed of 227 mph (365.4) on Utah’s legendary strip of speed heaven.

“This is a truly stunning achievement. Our goal was to break 200 mph as a celebration of 10 years of vRS, and we have achieved that, and significantly more. The success is a tribute to everyone who has worked so tirelessly and with such passion to make ŠKODA a world beater,” commented Robert Hazelwood, Director for Skoda UK.

The vRS technical team has been hard at work on the project for several months now, with help from performance software and tuning specialists REVO Technik. The Octavia has kept the 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI petrol engine block, but the standard turbo has been replaced with a more advanced unit from respected component firm Garret. Generating up to 600 HP, and producing 26-28 PSI of boost pressure, it runs on high-octane race fuel (with water methanol mix) instead of unleaded petrol.
