Silly Drivers Manage to Crash Two Small Cars on a Huge Sand Dune

Personally, I fail to see the appeal of going up the same sand dune over and over again. It’s probably thrilling the first time, but then it will only be the same no matter how many times you do it: gain enough speed as the incline approaches and then floor the throttle, hoping the tires and the car’s four-wheel-drive system do their jobs.

If they do, you get to celebrate with your mates on top; if they don’t, you’re in for a nerve wrecking descent in reverse, because the worst thing you can do is try to turn the car around. So this would explain why those going up are so reluctant to lift their foot off the gas pedal once they’ve begun their climb.

Since we don’t live near a desert, we’re not accustomed to the rules of sand dune climbing. On regular roads, if not stated otherwise, the vehicle that’s going up has the right of way, while the one descending has to give way. It’s a simple rule that’s meant to protect the driver performing the more difficult action.

It would also make sense to drive perpendicularly on the level curves of the dune at all times, regardless of whether you’re going up or down. On the other hand, it doesn’t take a physics Ph.D. to know that it’s virtually impossible for the car going down to brake effectively, so if you see one charging down in your direction, maybe doing something other than running straight into its path would be a good idea. Unfortunately, no good ideas were had that day.

In the end, no excuses can be found: there was just so much sand around them that it takes for two special kinds of idiots to meet for something like this to happen. The only positive to be had from this mishap is that the guy going down didn't end up barrel-rolling all the way to the base.
