Driver Finds Out Overtaking on the Emergency Lane Is Illegal for a Reason

Overtaking on the hard shoulder is a no-no 1 photo

Driving on the highway has got to be one of the simplest things in the world. It’s no coincidence that here is where autonomous cars are making their debut: it’s so easy, a monkey could do it.
With all cars heading in the same direction, all you have to do is keep your vehicle on a lane and move from one another when necessary, checking your surroundings and the mirrors every time you do it. And, of course, using the indicator to signal your intent.

It doesn’t get more straightforward than this. Oh, and just two more things: you’re not allowed to overtake cars on the inside lane (you’ll see adaptive cruise controls that won’t let you do it, even though the lane is clear) and you’re definitely not allowed to do it on the hard shoulder.

Well, apparently not everybody agrees with these rules, rules are made to be broken and all that crap that can partially explain the behavior of the driver in the clip below. Actually, no, scratch that, because absolutely nothing can make sense of that man’s actions. All he had to do was slow down after he had fallen back on the first lane and everything would have been OK, but unless he had his balls trapped under the brake pedal, there’s no real explanation.

And it’s a shame, too, because after his stupidity and recklessness had got him in this situation, he dealt with it quite admirably, signaling that there might actually be a good driver there, hiding under several layers of hooliganism. He brakes hard and even though his wheels appear to lock, he manages to remain in control and, after he cleared the parked car, he stops his vehicle on the right, so as to avoid a potential rear collision. Nice job.

The black SUV has the natural but incorrect reaction of braking, a decision that probably made the difference for the Kia Rio SW between getting out of this encounter scratch-free and hitting the stationary car with its right back side, as it eventually happened. Even so, it could have been a lot worse were it not for his near-perfect evasive action. At the same time, it could also have ended a lot better, were it not for his initial stupidity. And we can’t emphasize that hard enough.
