Is It a Lada? Is It a Tank? The Answer on Both Accounts Is “Da”

Most of the Northern Hemisphere is preparing to come out of yet another winter, but in the Ural mountains in Russia, that moment is still months away. So people do whatever they can to make life easier.
When you can’t rely on road services to clear the snow - because there aren’t any and, frankly, there are hardly any roads - you have to make do with what’s available to you. And if there are two things Russia isn’t lacking in, that’s got to be Ladas and tank tracks.

The Lada is the national car, a vehicle that first started as a copy of an old Fiat model (124) and then evolved from there. Not much at first, but in later years, the Russian brand has come up with more modern-looking models that seek to duel it out in the economy segment with other similar brands such as Renault’s Dacia.

If the image of a Lada climbed on top of a pair of tracks seems familiar to you, it’s probably because you’ve seen this little monster we’ve shown you earlier. But if that was based on a more modern Lada Samara, this one over here appears to have used a Lada 1500 as a donor.

It also looks slightly more capable than the Samara Monster Track (is that a thing? It should become a thing) with that little deck surrounding the car’s body allowing for easy access to the inside as well as the engine. Speaking of the engine, we’re not told whether the owner made any adjustments to it or it’s pure stock, but we do know that the hybrid vehicle comes with a 50 km/h (31 mph) top speed.

The owner calls his monstrous Lada the “Wolverine” and says it took him six months and around $1,300 to turn it into the go-anywhere vehicle we see now. The fact that he’s an engineer might have helped, too. Naturally, it gets new headlights mounted on the platform, and despite the high seating point, we doubt visibility is great. Then again, you don’t really need to see where you’re going in something like this. If there’s something in the way, it’s their job to get the hell out.
