SEAT UK has released details of the Ateca First Edition, a 200-strong lineup of SUVs that will herald the arrival of the model. Prices start at £21,995, which we think is too much for what's being offered, but we'll get to that later.
The First Edition is going to have levels of equipment between the SE and the top XCELLENCE trim level. According to the official statement, you get £3,500 worth of kit over the SE while making a £1,100 saving.
However, the part we don't like the crossover-like nature of the car. The engine you are getting is a small 1.0 TSI 3-cylinder turbocharged one with 115 PS. Your only other option is a 1.6 TDI of the same power output costing £24,305.
We've been looking at the interviews SEAT officials offered at the Geneva Motor Show, where the Ateca was revealed, and we've come the conclusion that this SUV is designed to be a rival for the Qashqai. Nissan's crossover is the most popular in Europe, and the Ateca slots directly into the slot left empty by the old Qashqai model before it grew.
The SEAT Ateca is not built on the same version of the MQB platform as the larger Volkswagen Tiguan. We're telling you this stuff in case you are considering buying one. Also worth knowing is that the heapest version money can buy is the entry-level Ateca S that starts at £17,990. The top trim level, which we won't try to spell again, starts at £23,905.
Because the configurator for the UK market is already up and running, we can tell you the more expensive Ateca model comes standard with a 150 PS 1.4-liter EcoTSI engine. If our money were on the line, we'd consider one of the 2.0 TDI engines, the most expensive version of which will set you back £29,990. Still, with 190 PS, AWD and a 7-speed DSG, the Ateca has performance figures a Qashqai can't even dream about.
