Schumacher to Do Mercedes Test Before Signing Deal

Michael Schumacher may indeed sign a one-year deal with Mercedes GP for his return in the Formula One series, but only after testing an F1 car designed by Ross Brawn. Namely, the 2-year old Brawn/Mercedes GP car will be available to Schu for a testing session in the upcoming few weeks, as reported by media in Italy and Germany.

Famous Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport cited the German tabloid Bild in reporting that Schu will get behind the wheel of a Honda-built 2007 F1 challenger, only the circuit for this alleged testing session is yet to be revealed.

This will not be Schumacher's only testing session on a 2-year old F1 car this year, as he previously driven in the Ferrari F2007 for a few laps prior to his projected return in 2009. After confirming his desire to replace Felipe Massa at Ferrari following the Hungarian Grand Prix, the German was given the opportunity to drive the aforementioned car on demonstration tires through Ferrari's Corse Clienti programme (as in-season testing in F1 is prohibited).

Since then, Schumacher did a lot of training, as it was believed Ferrari would push for a 3rd car per manufacturer for 2010 (in order to secure him a drive with the prancing horse). In addition, Schu has been attending several karting events since this summer.

Another thing revealed by the Italian media lately was an alleged meeting between Schumacher and Ferrari's CEO Luca di Montezemolo. We're not sure what the topic of discussion was – although he do have a pretty good idea – but the Italian boss admitted in the media that the 40-year old German is not legally bound to Ferrari.

No, (the contract is) not binding,” said Di Montezemolo, regarding the 3-year extension to Schumacher's deal with Ferrari, signed earlier this year. “I still haven't spoken to him about it. He is only a dear friend, not a team member. He is a consultant for our road cars,” added the Italian boss.
