Rotary-Powered Mazda RX-8 Gets a Digital Facelift, Sends Out Mazda6 Vibes

Ever since the demise of the RX-8 almost 10 years ago, Mazda has been rumored to launch a worthy successor to its rotary-powered sports car. They even went as far as previewing how such a model could look like with the beautiful RX-Vision Concept.

More recently, they have indirectly fueled even more rumors by filing a trademark for a logo with a rounded-triangle shape and the ‘e’ letter inside. Word on the street has it that it’s part of more trademarks, for the so-called ‘e-SkyActiv R’.

A coupe inspired by the looks of the show car has been supposedly previewed in a set of patent drawings. So does this mean that they are finally working on a production sports car with a rotary engine, perhaps backed up by hybrid power in order to keep it on the competitive side of the market?

We’d be tempted to say ‘yes’, but then again, we did so to just about every related rumor that has surfaced these past few years, and we still don’t have anything solid to work with. Nonetheless, we remain optimistic that Mazda will come up with a worthy rival to the likes of the Toyota Supra and Nissan Z. And so does KDesign, who imagined the RX-8 dressed in more modern clothes.

The renderings, shared by the artist on Behance, started up with the final generation of the RX-8, which has received the front end of the Mazda6, complete with the bumper, headlights, grille, and hood. The profile is identical to that of the rotary-powered model, and at the rear, it has a new set of taillights. Everything else carries over from the sports car, including the wheels.

While these digital illustrations are a far stretch from a possible revival of the RX-8 (or would it be the RX-7?), they have reminded us that such a vehicle might grace the car world. But would you want a new Mazda RX?
