It seems that bringing out an SUV Rolls-Royce is a bigger challenge than some anticipated. In order to do things right, the British brand decided to build a new Technology and Logistics Center at Bognor Regis, near Goodwood, in West Sussex.
The project has been in the works for some time now, but Rolls-Royce just confirmed that it will hopefully be done by 2016. And to celebrate this new milestone, the Brits did an old-fashion showcase of one of their models, bringing a Rolls-Royce Wraith onto the construction site. According to them, this marked “the first time that one of the super-luxury manufacturer’s motor cars has been present at the new facility.”

Located just eight miles from the Goodwood plant where all Rolls-Royce cars are made, the new center will have an inbound warehouse for production parts, distribution center, and a workshop.

However, don’t think that this center will only be used for these purposes. As a matter of fact, it will have a vital importance in the development of two new models: a drophead coupe in 2016 and the new SUV later on.

The latter will need a lot of research and development and in doing so, this new facility will prove vital. Don’t go imagining that the Brits will be bringing out an X5 with the Phantom’s Pantheon grille stuck to its front fascia. As a matter of, just like the CEO said in a public letter, the car will be more of an all-terrain vehicle.

That means that it will look more like an estate version of the Phantom, with a higher ride height than an SUV. Of course, it’s all really sketchy at the moment as the designers are still discussing which way to go so that the new car would have its DNA intact while also offering more versatility to its owners.

No matter how it turns out, it’s good to know that the new model will have its own chassis, and it will not share it with the upcoming BMW X7. It’s not that BMW’s not good at bringing out a good chassis but if you’re going to pay top dollar for a car, at least you should get all that comes with it.
