Originally twinned with the fifth-gen 7 Series, the Ghost was redesigned on the so-called Architecture of Luxury in 2020 for the 2021 model year. Technically different from the BMW CLAR platform, the aluminum spaceframe also underpins the Phantom, fully electric Spectre, and Cullinan.
Gifted with squeaky plastics despite starting at $350k for the 2023 model year, the Ghost has been hit with a safety recall. A grand total of 1,305 units produced for the 2021 through 2023 model years are called back over their instrument cluster's tempered glass.

The single-layer tempered glass is prone to break into small (and somewhat sharp) pieces in a crash, thus increasing the risk of injury to the driver. According to documents filed with the federal watchdog, the part number for said component is 9496735. Supplied by Schroeder Spezialglas of Germany, the single-layer tempered glass will be addressed by dealers nationwide with a protecting coating.

Rolls-Royce dealers nationwide will be informed of this recall no later than October 16. Owners will follow suit on or about November 13 via first-class mail. According to the British automaker, the suspect vehicle population features production dates ranging from February 17, 2020 through December 8, 2022.

BMW became aware of this condition more than three years ago. Back in May 2020, the Bavarian automaker conducted a high-speed crash test which concluded with the instrument cluster's tempered glass breaking on impact. Subsequent tests determined a very low risk of injury for the driver.

Even so, further evaluations were undertaken, with BMW eventually deciding to change from single-layer tempered glass to double-layer laminated glass in April 2022. This change was implemented into vehicle production in December 2022. Be that as it may, BMW revisited the concern in March 2023.

After reassessing the matter, the Munich-based automaker decided to recall said luxury sedans out of an abundance of caution. Reading between the lines, that should be read as out of fear of a lawsuit.

What is particularly surprising is that BMW preferred to apply a coating to the suspect glass panel instead of replacing it with the redesigned glass panel. Kind of cheap on their part, and pretty startling as well. After all, this is a hugely expensive car that slots well above the seventh-generation 7 Series.

The Ghost comes with the BMW-developed N74 twin-turbo V12 of its predecessor, although revised for this application. The 6.75-liter colossus hiding underhood makes 563 horsepower and 627 pound-feet (850 Nm) from the outset. Level up to the Black Badge, and the numbers are 591 hp and 664 pound-feet (900 Nm).

Rolls-Royce broke its annual sales record in 2022, delivering 6,021 vehicles to clients in roughly 50 countries. The Ghost was especially popular in the Asia-Pacific region, although the Cullinan is the best-selling Roller of the bunch due to its more practical form factor and higher ground clearance.
