German camper manufacturer Rocket Camper has built a reputation for offering innovative camping solutions that focus more on functionality rather than elegance and style, and their latest camper concept is no exception. Unveiled at the recent CMT camper show, the new offering is called Surf 'n’ Sail and is designed to keep water sports lovers comfortable before, during, and after their adventure on the water.
Camper vans are the most versatile type of motorhome out there. They can be easily adapted and customized to support different lifestyles and outdoor adventures. We've seen camper conversions specifically designed with kiteboarders in mind and models built to cater to the specific needs of bikers or hikers. Now, we are presented with a new and exceptional van conversion built from the ground up for water sports enthusiasts.

The Surf 'n' Sail camper concept stands out with a unique design, a practical layout, and innovative features and storage solutions for all kinds of water sports equipment. It is designed to be the perfect companion for experienced surfers and other water sports enthusiasts, with a comfortable mobile living space and plenty of board racks to haul the necessary gear. It makes room for larger items with features like a Murphy bed and deconstructed kitchen that get out of the way during the day, and it even has separate "wet" and "dry" zones.

This camper is based on a Peugeot Boxer or Fiat Ducato panel van, and its interior is configured in such a way as to make the most of the available square footage while also offering a feeling of spaciousness without exceeding the 3.5-ton permissible total weight.

Inspired by racing yachts and dinghies, the interior design is more practical than stylish, with well-delineated functional areas. The floor plan is divided into two areas - wet and dry - but the designers kept an open-plan layout to maximize the use of space and to allow owners to make use of the entire length of the vehicle for storage needs.

The floors are covered in gray, striped polyurethane, a light and soft material that is resistant to water and sand, while the interior walls showcase a mix of felted, wood-clad, and light surfaces.

The front part of the van is the "dry” area and comprises a kitchenette, lounge/dining area, toilet, and navigation space. The kitchen block is situated behind the driver's seat and is equipped with a dual-burner stove, a sink, and a worktop. Several cabinets and drawers provide storage space. One of these cabinets stores the portable toilet, and there is a separate cabinet that houses the refrigerator on the passenger side of the van.

The van's seats are both mounted on swivel bases, so they rotate and thus significantly increase the interior living space. Moreover, they create a nice lounging/dining space in the front, together with a tabletop that can be attached to the kitchen counter with Rocket Camper's signature straps and carabiners. When the table is not in use, the lengthwise configuration of the kitchen cabinets creates an open, spacious feel and makes room for storing even more equipment.

As in many other camper vans, multifunctionality is key, so the front seating area can also be used as a planning and navigation center, with the marine radio and weather station above the sliding door allowing you to monitor weather conditions during your outdoor adventures.

Up until this point, it might sound like a regular van conversion, but what really makes Rocker Camper's Surf 'n’ Sail conversion the ultimate camper for water sports lovers is the rear section of the van, which has been converted into a wet zone. It boasts a waterproof floor, a spacious indoor shower, plenty of practical storage options, drying places for wet equipment, as well as a built-in water drain system.

The shower can be used to rinse your water sports gear and equipment before hanging it to dry. A private shower cabin can be created with the use of a curtain that hangs on the roof rack. When everything has been cleaned up, the shower setup can be stowed away in one of the over-wheel well storage boxes running the length of the rear area. An outdoor shower on one of the rear doors of the van is also available.

Angled waterproof side panels ensure easy drainage, while a dual ceiling fan and interior heating system eliminate moist air and create a dry and warm atmosphere for bedtime.

The long side storage boxes double as seating space and incorporate functional features, such as sockets, audio speakers, and a compressor air pump. Each of these boxes also incorporates storage tubes at the base for sail masts, mats, and other long, slim gear.

One of the side walls is fitted with a stack of adjustable peg racks, creating a flexible storage area for surfboards, kiteboards, foil boards, paddles, booms, canvas bags, and other water sports equipment. Translucent safety nets installed between the cabin and the rear area secure the cargo appropriately.

An innovative feature inside this van is the interior full-length roof rack, which can be used for storing longer surfboards, windsurf sails, paddleboards, or kayaks, as well as for hanging helmets and wet suits. Between the side board rack, long roof rack, and pass-through floor, this camper van can transport more boards than passengers.

After a day of fun on the water, you will need a cozy, inviting place to rest and recharge. Rocket Camper has presented the Surf 'n' Sail van at CMT with a comfortable Murphy bed that unfolds over the waterproof tub floor, but the company could also include a fixed bed, an elevator bed, or a hammock in this area.

With its unique design and thoughtful features, the Surf 'n' Sail camper van would be the ultimate motorhome for water sports lovers. For now, it's just a concept camper, and we can only hope Rocket Camper decides to eventually put it into production or at least include some of its features on the options list.
