There’s no denying the fact that the Rivian R1S is one of the best battery electric full-size SUVs on sale today. It’s got the range, it’s got the room, and it’s got the performance. Some people even love the design. However, selling a used one right now might be a bit problematic if you’re unwilling to take a loss.
EVs like the R1S were never going to go up in value over time, so the fact that some people were purchasing them at over MSRP when they first started appearing on the used market represented nothing more than an unburst bubble.
The R1S first went into production back in 2022 with either two or four electric motor configurations, as well as sufficient room for seven passengers. It’s based on the R1T pickup and like its more utilitarian sibling, it too can accelerate like a bat out of hell whenever you floor the throttle.
Rivian products also happen to be surprisingly nice inside, featuring a clean dashboard design and an overall relaxing ambiance. Dare I say, it feels like you’re in a Volvo, which is a huge compliment for an EV start-up.
Now back to this specific 2023 R1S – it's a quad-motor Adventure Edition model, which according to the ad cost its original buyer $82,300 to purchase. The vehicle subsequently got auctioned off last summer, when it fetched $91,000 for a nice profit of $8,700. Unfortunately, its latest owner can now kiss profits goodbye after this R1S failed to meet its reserve a few days ago, while in search of yet another new home.
The highest bid maxed out at $73,500 and for some reason, the seller thought they could get more, which is surprising seeing as how the car already has 4,100 miles on the clock to go with a cracked windshield. Looking at other similar R1S specs that sold recently on the used market (Adventure Edition Quad-Motor), I can’t help but feel as though $73,500 would have been a fair price for this vehicle.
It’s extremely unlikely that it’ll end up fetching more when it resurfaces, but hey, stranger things have happened, I guess.
As for a closer look at the spec, you’ve got the Midnight finish for the exterior, to go with the black lower-body cladding, a fixed panoramic sunroof, LED lighting, and optional 22-inch Sport Dark wheels with Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires and yellow brake calipers at all corners.
Inside, there’s Black Mountain vegan leather upholstery for the heated and ventilated seats, Dark Ash wood trim for the cabin, multi-zone climate control, a wireless smartphone charging pad, adaptive cruise control, a 15.3” touchscreen infotainment system, a heated steering wheel, plus all the active safety tech you’d want from a modern-day people hauler.
Finally, the quad-motor setup, which consists of two dual-motor drive units that combine for a total of 835 horsepower and 908 lb-ft of torque. Let’s just say performance will never be an issue with this thing and move on.
