After Groupe Renault has started teasing the mid-size SUV that will slot above the compact-sized Kadjar, a question had to be asked: will it be called the Maxthon? The answer to that is most probably no, the model won’t bear the name thrown around like a ragdoll in the automotive rumor mill.
Maxthon is the intellectual property of Maxthon Ltd. Alas, Renault doesn't have the right to use the nameplate. After a thorough search through Renault’s trademarks, we reckon that the mid-size SUV is going to be christened Kilimandjaro or Kayak.
Think about it for a second; other than the Scenic RX4, all modern crossovers and SUVs produced by Renault start with C or K (Koleos, Captur, Kaptur, Kadjar). These being said, Kilimandjaro and Kayak fit like a jigsaw falling into place. Bear in mind you’ve read it here first.
As you can see from the two teasers shared by Renault on Twitter, theMaxthon Killimandjaro or Kayak will get full LED headlights similar in design to those of the Megane IV and Talisman. The other teaser features 19-inch alloy wheels and that’s about everything Renault is willing to share for now.
The photographs taken by the carparazzi can tell us more, though. For starters, the medium-sized SUV shares its CMF-CD platform with the Nissan Rogue (X-Trail in Europe). Available as a five- or seven-seater, the Maxthon Kilimandjaro or Kayak will be presented at the Beijing Motor Show at the end of April.
In terms of motivation, four-cylinder turbo petrol and turbo diesel engines will have to do. Compared to the CVT-enhanced Nissan, the mid-size SUV from Renault will be available with an EDC dual-clutch automatic transmission. As for interior styling, don’t expect the dashboard to undergo a radical departure from what you get in the Talisman, Megane, and Kadjar.
P.S.: Renault has also trademarked Raidster and Otanko under “Vehicles; Apparatus for locomotion by land, in particular automobiles, cycles, bicycles, motor scooters, motorcycles, tricycles, spare parts and accessories for all the aforesaid goods.” Only time will tell what the French carmaker plans to do with these monikers.
