Renault Appoints Carlos Tavares COO

Not officially confirmed yet by the French manufacturer, the appointment of Carlos Tavares, the current chairman of Nissan Americas, as the group's new chief operating officer was announced by Nissan, who made a senior leadership changes public a bit too soon.

The decision to name Tavares, a name thought to be that of Renault's new COO ever since last week, to this new position comes not long after Renault's former COO, Patrick Pelata, was forced to leave in the wake of the spy-that-never-was scandal that rocked the car maker earlier in the year.

Pelata's place at the helm of Nissan's American operations will be taken by Colin Dodge, who will become chairman, Management Committee-Americas. Dodge is currently Executive Vice President and Chief Performance Officer for Nissan's  global operations. He will be aided by Bill Krueger as vice chairman, Nissan Americas.

"Bill Krueger has demonstrated the business acumen and leadership qualities necessary to take on the added responsibilities required of a resident Vice Chairman," said Dodge. "As I assume Chairman responsibilities for the Americas Bill will be instrumental in managing the day-to-day operational aspects of our business in the region."

As we wait from the official word from Renault announcing the move, which will become effective on June 13, will remind you that this shift in personnel was caused by Pelata's poor handling of a spy scandal a while back.

Three of the car maker's top employees were charged with spying on behalf of a Chinese automaker, but in the end all three men were cleared of all accusations and even paid compensation the the wrong accusations.
