Renault is more than capable of making some of the best front-wheel drive chassis in the world. Their hot hatches set the benchmark for all others to follow. However, Renault doesn’t really have that much experience with rear-wheel driven cars, which are slightly different.
It is their lack of rear-wheel drive experience which has led them to choose Caterham as its partner with which they would be co-developing the production version of their Alpine A110-50 Concept, and not Lotus, as it was suggested a while back.
The information comes from autocar.co.uk, who spoke with Renault CEO, Carlos Tavares. He told the British publication that the platform for the car was now finished, and that the car would be entering production, if a worthy partner with which they could split the development costs would be found.
The story goes further on, saying that Caterham themselves would build a second version of the car, based on the same underpinnings. Keep in mind that the connection between the two companies has already been made, since Renault provides the Caterham F1 team with engines.
If the information is accurate, then it should be made public in one months’ time.
