This model has many names - Avante at home in South Korea, the affordable Elantra (starting at just $21,475 for 2024MY) in North America, and also the i30 Sedan in the Land Down Under because of a trick.
While many markets see a decline in passenger car sales because of a lack of interest in stuff like hatchbacks, sedans, and minivans, Australia is still going strong with its love for such endangered species. For example, Hyundai considers the compact i30 lineup, composed of a five-door liftback, hatchback, and station wagon, quite successful and popular with its consumer base.

So much so that the company integrated the Avante/Elantra model into the same lineup with the name i30 Sedan to capitalize on the nameplate's popularity, even though they also sell the Fastback model there. Now, after the refreshed Avante was first introduced at home in February and the facelifted Elantra arrived in America right before the fall's start, it's time for the Land Down Under to welcome the updated 2024 i30 Sedan – and for the first time, it also comes with a hybrid powertrain.

For the 2024 model year, the Hyundai i30 Sedan has "refreshed styling, updated features, and the choice of three engines." Additionally, a new version dubbed simply i30 replaces the previous Avante base model, followed by Elite and Premium versions, plus the sporty N Line and N Line Premium, which are only available with the 1.6 T-GDi powertrain and a seven-speed DCT gearbox.

Interestingly, Hyundai keeps it simple, with the i30 versions starting at AUD29k (a little over $18k) and the new 1.6 GDi Hybrid following swiftly at AUD33k (almost $21k). The pricing details for the Elite and Premium Hybrid have yet to be available, but the N-Line versions start from AUD36k and AUD$41,500, respectively ($22,630 and $26k at the current exchange rate). Which, frankly, is not that bad if you think about the US-spec Elantra, right?

Anyway, the Australian i30 Sedan has the SmartStream G2.0 MPi Atkinson engine at the base, offering improved technology like D-CVVT (Dual-Continuously Variable Valve Timing), VIS (Two-stage Variable Intake System), and the efficient Atkinson combustion cycle. At the same time, the SmartStream G1.6 T-GDi "is designed to suit customers seeking a higher performance powertrain, and offers greater power and torque in an exceptionally refined package."

The 1.6 GDi Hybrid is the main novelty for Australia, and Hyundai says it's derived from the old Ioniq's gasoline-electric hybrid system mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission as opposed to the iCVT of the 2.0 MPi. With help from the electric motor, the i30 Sedan Hybrid has the same torque as the 1.6 turbo but with significant efficiency improvements (combined fuel economy is 3.9 liters/100km ADR) enabled by the 1.32 kWh battery pack. However, don't expect much driving in EV mode – it's only used at low speeds and during coasting.
