Everyday life may be difficult enough to make one have to struggle in order to reach a track day, but there are machines like the Ariel Atom, which are simply to hot to ignore. The Atom is currently in its 3.5 generation, a revamp for the Atom 3 that’s been on the market for about one year now and it seems that Ariel is working on a special edition for this.
Dubbed Ariel Atom 3.5R, the spicier incarnation of the track toy is set to offer a new gearbox with paddle shifters, a moderate power boost, as well as a set of suspension tweaks.
Let’s be honest here - the heel and toe stuff is nice, but we’d rather have some paddle shifters at hand so we can focus on the rest of the driving when we’re out on the track. Apparently, we are not alone in this and Ariel is introducing such a transmission following customer feedback.
The most extreme incarnation of the Atom, the V8 (pictured above), features such goodies and those who drove it told the company they were impressed with the gearbox. Now they’re introducing something similar on the Atom 3.5R. We are talking about a Sadev six-speed unit, which is not the same featured on the V8, but comes with the same Geartronic control hardware.
As for the engine, the Honda Civic-sourced 2.0-liter four-cylinder stays in place. Nonetheless, the supercharger fitted to it will is tweaked to offer a bit of extra boost. You should expect the muscle to go from the current 310 hp to somewhere around 350 hp. We like “rounded” figures like this.
The Ariel Atom 3.5R talks to the road via new dampers - the Ohlins dampers with the separate reservoirs will make room for Ohlins TTX dampers. While these use internal reservoirs, coming with a more conventional look, Ariel promises both ride and handling will be happier.
With a car like this, the rubber choice is just as important as having petrol in your tank. The 3.5R was gifted with a set of bespoke Kumho tires.
