Range Rover to Build a Mini Competitor

Since the Mini is now as British as a Bratwurst, Land Rover has decided they want to create a new mini-Evoque to take on the best that Mini, Volkswagen and BMW have to offer in the small luxury SUV range.

According to autoexpress magazine sources, the crossover will have a shorter wheelbase, giving less space in the back but also making the car lighter and more practical around town. The little Range Rover will have Lower suspension, a more steeply raked roofline and shorter overhang to give it the softer features of a city car.

The same sources also say the car will cost less than £25,000 ($40,000), making it ideal for younger customers who want a bit of presence from a practical car.

Range Rover is adapting its model range to ever changing market, introducing lighter, mode efficient models that also appeal to a young audience rather then its traditional clientele. New engines, such as the 2.2-liter diesel that can deliver CO2 emissions as low as 135 grams per kilometer, make the British brand look greener then ever. The baby-crossover will be slotted in the model range under the Range Rover Evoque, which will be between £30,000 and £85,000 ($48,000 and $135,000).

“It’s an opportunity to take Land Rover back to its roots in a modern way. On the left, the versatile, but softer SUV market and to the right the hardcore, utilitarian market,” according to Land Rover’ Head Designer, Gerry McGovern. “There is now the ability with both Range Rover and Land Rover to respond to a changing market, so what I’d say is watch this space.”
