Michael Dobson is a New Zealand guy who likes bikes, and has spent much of his life building and servicing BMW police bikes. That's why seeing him choosing an R80RT for a most interesting customization job was small surprise.
With 34 years of bike mechanic expertise and more than 20 of hey years getting his hands dirty with BMW oil, Michael Dobson was sure to create a stunning bike, no matter where the project was about to end.
With the initial idea to have the 1986 BMW R80RT he actually assembled many years back turned into a bobber, Michael Dobson found himself strangely steering into the chopper lane, with the new bike being a mixture of the stow styles, and getting a funny name: the Bopper.
It took Michael two years to have the Bopepr ready, but the new bike is as clean-looking as an R80RT could ever get and it sports top-drawer performance. A Siebenrock 1000cc kit was used to rebuild the engine, adding a 21” R80GS front wheel, an aluminium disc for the rear wheel, inverted K100RS handles and an Ural solo seat.
The Ural seat also meant losing the subframe and pillion pegs for a truly solo look. New carbs, customized tank and hand-painted classic black and white finish, they all make Michael Dobson's R80RT Bopper stand from the crowd. And the dual Cyclewors silncers also add a dash of steampunk design we simply love.
