With the Ford Mustang turning 50 years this year, celebrations of the legendary pony car are reaching well beyond the shores of the U.S. As proof of how deep Mustang passion runs, the Silverstone Classic plans to have a huge display to commemorate the Mustang’s 50th birthday, and Pure Michigan just signed up to be a partner for this year’s festivities.
This year’s Silverstone Classic runs from July 25th through July 27, and although it might seem odd that the official travel and tourism department of Michigan is helping to sponsor an event in Great Britain, the Michigan-built Mustangs are going to be prominently featured all three days both on the track and on the in-field displays. There will also be plenty of unique giveaway opportunities with this partnership.
“The iconic Ford Mustang is one of Michigan’s greatest creations and thus provides us the best possible platform to promote the State’s multitude of other attractions. As well as supporting all the amazing Mustang celebrations, we will be providing some special prizes giving showgoers the chance to win a fabulous trip to the US not just to see the delights of Michigan but also to visit the world famous Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn,” said Dave Lorenz, Pure Michigan’s international marketing manager.
For the classic races, there will be two 58-car races, and there will be 30 race-prepped classic Mustangs participating, which Silverstone says is a record. Although it might not be as big of a record as the 60 Ferrari F40s that gathered in 202 or the 767 Jaguar E-Types that were on the track in 2011, seeing the 30 historic Mustang racecars running around the track should be an incredible sight.
In terms of off track activities, Silverstone says that part of the Mustang celebration will include hundreds of examples of the pony car from each of its 50 years, including an all-new 2015 Ford Mustang will be on display to inspire the next generation of Mustang enthusiasts. Among these cars will be movie cars including Eleanor from Gone in 60 Seconds and the hero Mustang from Bullitt.
