Somebody went even further and tried to give an estimation to the number of holes and potholes that can be found on the British roads. The number they came up with: three million potholes, which will take an estimated 11 years to repair and cost more than 100 million pounds.
"Britain's motorists are paying record levels of taxation and yet receive poor value for money. Skimping can cost lives and not a single one should be lost on the roads for want of a pothole being filled or surface renewed," Edmund King, president of the AA was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.
The figures of the report were based on some 50,000 insurance claims, which in addition gave a good perspective on the regions worst battered by the pothole offensive: more of them to the North, less to the South. From the top ten worst regions to take your car, five are in Scotland and four in Northern England.
The average repair bill due to pothole damage amounts to 240 pounds, even if insurance claims are mostly in the 2,700 pounds range. The total amounts to 413 million pounds a year. That's over one million pounds a day.
