How to Avoid Potholes

One of the biggest fears a modern day driver can face is to hit a pothole at high enough speeds to send the rims and rubbers flying all over the place. Serious cases aside, this could mean lots of wasted time, dirt on your hands, swearing, cursing and so on.

Potholes are a major issue especially in the former Soviet space. Some 20 years after the fall of the Soviet block, eastern European countries still face a major challenge in rebuilding their road infrastructure (those who live there know what we mean).

To come back on the topic of this article, the last thing on a driver's mind is to look out for the mother of all potholes, big enough to swallow the entire car, along with its five wheels (spare included), its driver and everything else in it.

As you can see, this is what happened to an unfortunate Ukrainian Volkswagen Golf driver who found out, the hard way, how does it feel to encounter such a crater. He/she drove the car straight into this Grand Canyon of potholes and had to escape by using the fifth door of the hatchback, as the rear of the VW was the only part of the vehicle that didn't submerged.

We looked closely at the pictures and found a possible reason behind the driver's decision to steer the car straight into this trap. As you can see, lots of baby potholes, smaller in size but meaner in appearance, cover the so called road.

Acting on his/her biggest fear (we talked about it earlier), the driver must have decided to avoid going through the crowd of sharp-edged, menacing looking holes and head for the smoother surface of what appeared to be a small lake in the middle of the street. As we can see, not a smart choice.

And to answer the challenge we proposed in the title of this article, the only advice we can give you is that it is better to avoid large bodies of water in the middle of the roads than the potholes you can see.
